Brunswick Community Library Annual Report for 2004

Significant Events for the Year:

• We received a grant from the Ronald McDonald Charities for $5,000 to buy non-fiction books for the children's room. This material will be used to help with homework assignments.
• Jane Chirgwin, Children's Librarian, began offering a new monthly program, Take Home Crafts! Each month children can get a unique craft kit. The instructions and all the materials need to complete a craft are included. Instructions and templates can also be downloaded from our website. We distributed over 500 kits this year (an average of 47 per month), and the kits were downloaded off the Internet 2,726 times.
• We were awarded $2,000 by the Arts Center of the Capital Region's reception in support of the Summer Reading Program, Once Upon A Time.
• After five years as Director, Carol Trager left the library on July 1st. Carol saw the library through a period of growth and change. Among many other accomplishments, Carol worked hard to gain the added support from the Brittonkill School District in 2002, enabling the library to open on Fridays, and to hire a children's librarian.
• In November we welcomed a new director, Julie Zelman.
• As part of a settlement from a class-action suit against the music industry's price fixing practices, we received over 150 music CDs. The genres included everything from classic rock to opera to film scores.

• We circulated 42,853 items—an increase of 12% over 2003.
• Our Bookmobile to Rouse-Senior housing circulated 287 items.
• Our Bookmobile to ARC circulated 245 items.

Programming in 2004

• We held 43 Story Hours averaging 14 participants for each hour.
• We held 23 programs for children and young adults, with over 850 participants, including:
  Beading, Egg Decorating, Author Visit with Dave Ross, Medieval Fare Yard Party, Merdwin the Magician, Book Swap, Write Your Own Book, Sheep and Wool, Design a Shield, School House Rock, Rowdy the River Rat, Red Cross Babysitter Training, Hands on History, Mexican Fiesta, Introductory Knitting, Aunt Helen's Closet
• We made five school visits and met with 1000 students.
• The Book Discussion Group met 9 times with an average of 4 people in attendance.
• The Book and Movie Group met 19 times with an average of 4 people in attendance.
• We processed 28 U.S. Passport applications
• We trained 40 people in computer classes on topics such as Internet Searching, Computer Buying Tips and Word Processing.
• We sponsored a Defensive Driving class with 56 in attendance and raised $880.
• Our ongoing Basement Book Sale raised $2,017.
