Brunswick Community Library Annual Report for 2002

Accomplishments for the Year:

We were awarded our “Absolute Charter” from the Board of Regents, Education Department of the State of New York, on April 23, 2002.
The Brittonkill School District Ballot vote passed and we now receive annually $35,000 collected by the school district.
Our 2002 fund raising drives and programs raised over $20,000.
We won the UHLS 2001 Program of the Year Award for Rural Libraries for the Brunswick Center bookmobile project.
We began the Planning for Results process and held a strategic planning meeting with key community stakeholders. A report documenting the process and priorities for the Library was completed.

Challenges Ahead

Space continues to be our biggest problem. However, the Board of Trustees continues to work with the Town of Brunswick to find a new location for a bigger library.
With the increase in Library staff and hours of operation in 2003 while we transition to a new automation system, our programs and level of service will continue to improve.

*Large decrease in patrons due to a change in the system of registration. Previously all patrons remained on our rolls.

Arts Center of the Capital Region: $1,100+

For the Telling Sweet Tales programs. Young authors wrote their own books and experienced bakers teamed with children for baking and oral histories.
Families Read: $1,500
Programs and materials to encourage families to read-a-loud together. To promote a life-long love of reading.
I*Spy My Hometown: $ 655
Children learned about local historic sites. They photographed, researched and provided local tours. There is a website and map of the places. We had historic programs for adults and children.
Howard & Bush Automation: $8,500+
From the Friends: $1,000
For the purchase of updated computer equipment for the Library and a laptop computer to be used in the field.
Senator Bruno $5,000
Legislative grant for our building campaign.
From The Friends: $2,020
For staffing our bookmobiles, to purchase large print books, video cassettes, additional insurance and a video cassette stand.
Total: $20,275

Our circulation (materials checked out) increased by 8%.
Our Interlibrary loans increased by 47%. Our patrons continued to expand their use of the Interlibrary loan system.
Our collection continued to grow. We increased our materials by 13%.
Our number of registered borrowers increased by over 23%. With our increased visibility in the community, via programs, bookmobiles and press coverage, we increased the number of patrons using our Library.
Our Web page continued to expand and be more user friendly. We experienced a 7.7% increase in usage over the previous year. Our patrons took advantage of our Internet and Computer classes, as well as individual instruction at the Library. This translated into increased Web page usage.

Program Participation in 2002

The Brunswick Community Library held 110 programs with 3,459 people in attendance in 2002. Although the number of programs remained the same as last year, there was over a 34% increase in attendance. The list below highlights the Library programs of 2002.

We held 39 Story Hours averaging 20 participants for each hour.
The Book Group met 9 times with approximately 3 people attending each meeting.
Our Young Adult Book Group met 2 times with an average of 18 teens at each meeting.
We provided 13 Internet and Computer Training Classes with an average of 10 people attending each class. Classes are held at Tamarac High School so that each participant has access to a computer.
We sponsored a Red Cross program to enable teens to be trained as babysitters and 20 students completed that program.
We held a Harry Potter Trivia Night, with prizes and refreshments. 31 people participated.
We sponsored a Defensive Driving Class as a fundraiser for the Library. We raised $650 and 50 people attended.
With the Brittonkill School District we held the Third Annual Joys of Summer Concert, where 125 people listened to music, poetry and enjoyed refreshments provided by the Friends.
There were 14 programs related to the Summer Reading Program with an average of 24 people attending each event.
The Board of Trustees held a Volunteer Recognition Reception with a Victorian Guitarist performing. 43 people were in attendance.
We held a stimulating archeology program with 30 people in attendance.
We co-sponsored a musical concert with the Town of Brunswick and 400 people attended.
We raised $825 at a Chicken Barbecue with 320 people participating.
We raised over $750 at our Teddy Bear Picnic, where 70 people attended.
We held 9 programs in conjunction with the I*Spy My Hometown Project, with an average of 37 people in attendance.
We held 3 family programs in conjunction with the Families Read Project, with an average of 20 people in attendance.
The Trustees raised over $3,350 at our Winter Dreams auction and dinner in November, where 85 people attended.
We held a four-week stop smoking class taught by an American Cancer Society trained facilitator. An average of 3 people attended each session.
