Brunswick Community Library Annual Report for 2001

Accomplishments for the Year

• We began monthly bookmobile service to the Brunswick Center, ARC.
• We expanded our monthly senior bookmobile service to ROUSE at Brunswick.
• We hired an architectural firm to develop plans for our building project.
• New York State recognized our name change to "Brunswick Community Library".
• Our 2001 fund raising drives and programs raised a record breaking $21,524!
• Patrons can now access multiple databases from their homes for research through the Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS).
• Patrons can now renew home library items via the Internet.
• We won the 2000 Program of the Year Award for Rural Libraries from the UHLS for the senior bookmobile project.
• We were on the Brittonkill School District Ballot vote to receive $35,000 for our Library, but lost with a vote of 515 against and 514 for.
• We added books on compact discs for our patrons.

Challenges Ahead

• Space continues to be our biggest problem. However, the Board of Trustees is working with the Town of Brunswick to find a new location for a bigger library.
• As the collection and programs grow, the need for increasing staff hours and benefits becomes more apparent.

• Our circulation (materials checked out) increased by over 10%.
• Our Interlibrary loans increased by almost 38%. Our patrons continue to expand their usage of the Interlibrary loan system.
• Our collection continues to grow. We increased our materials by over 1.5%. We have little space to add to our collection.
• Our collection growth was almost 22% less than last year. The large increase in our collection in 2000 can be attributed to grant monies used to update and expand our collection.
• Our number of registered borrowers increased by over 21%. With our increased visibility in the community, we increase the number of patrons using our Library.
• Our Web page continues to expand and be more user friendly. Our patrons take advantage of our Internet and Computer classes, as well as individual instruction at the Library. This helps to translate into increased Web page usage. We began tracking hits to our web pages April 2001.

Program Participation in 2001

The Brunswick Community Library held 110 programs with 2,574 people in attendance in 2001. This is almost a 5% increase in the number of programs over last year. We continue to expand the nature of our programs to appeal to a larger audience. The list below highlights the Library programs of 2001.

• We held 41 Story Hours averaging 17 participants for each hour.
• The Book Group met 9 times with approximately 4 people attending each meeting.
• Our Young Adult Book Group met 3 times with an average of 7 teens at each meeting.
• We provided 12 Internet and Computer Training Classes with an average of 11 people attending each class. Classes are held at Tamarac High School so that each participant has access to a computer.
• We sponsored a Red Cross program to enable teens to be trained as babysitters and 20 students completed that program.
• We sponsored a Defensive Driving Class as a fundraiser for the Library. We raised $500 and 48 people attended.
• There were 19 programs related to the Summer Reading Program with an average of 21 people attending each event.
• We brought 3 musical concerts to Brunswick with an average of 121 people in attendance.
• The Library hired The Troy Junior Museum to conduct an international program and 30 people attended.
• We played BOOK BINGO and Harry Potter Trivia on two separate occasions and an average of 33 people participated.
• We participated in the Fabric of Freedom grant with Upper Hudson Library System and the Brunswick Historical Society. A group of Quilters completed and raffled a "Pinwheel" quilt, which raised over $330. We brought blues musician Tom Winslow to Tamarac School and historical author Allen Ballard to Brunswick Presbyterian Church. We served 290 people at these programs.
• We raised over $700 at our Fashion Show where 100 people attended.
• We raised almost $1,700 at our Brunch with Ms. Frizzle and Franklin, where 75 people attended.
• The Trustees raised almost $4,000 at our auction and dinner in November, where 91 people attended.
• In conjunction with the Town of Brunswick Youth Department, we held a Lego Program during the April school vacation. 85 children participated in this program.
• To bring attention to the Library Ballot vote in May, we held a Literacy Walk, where 65 people walked at least 3 miles each in support of the Library.
• We held a four-week stop smoking class taught by an American Cancer Society trained facilitator. An average of 4 people attended each session.
