Brunswick Community Library Annual Report for 2000

Accomplishments for the Year:

We added compact discs to our collection.
We began bookmobile service to three senior groups in the community.
We began monthly young adult programs this summer.
Our 2000 fund raising drive raised a record breaking $11,180!
Patrons can now request items from the Upper Hudson catalog via the Internet from remote locations.

Challenges Ahead

Space continues to be our biggest problem. However, the Board of Trustees has recommitted themselves to this large task by successfully obtaining more town financial support. They have begun the process to get consistent funding from the school districts.
As the collection and programs grow, the need for increasing staff hours and salary becomes more apparent.

Grants Received

McDonald House Charities $5,000
To obtain new and updated non-fiction juvenile material to help with homework projects.

Babies Need Books & Libraries $1,643
To introduce new parents to reading to their infants and taking their children to the library. To obtain board books, an infant changing station and children's subscriptions. In addition to a Red Cross Infant Child Saver Class.

Outreach Grant -Senior Bookmobile $1000+
From The Friends: $ 500
To provide bookmobile service to three Senior Citizen groups and to purchase large print books.

Arts Center of the Capital District $900+
From The Friends: $500
To provide musical programs for people of all ages and to begin a compact disc collection.

Story Circle of the Capital District $180
To provide a workshop for adults to practice storytelling and to share this art with others in the community.

After raising money from local businesses, Sunday hours returned in May and June. We closed on Sunday during the Summer and began again in September. Many patrons take advantage of these hours.
Our circulation (materials checked out) increased by over 6%.
Our Interlibrary loans increased by almost 11%. Our patrons continue to expand their usage of the Interlibrary loan system.
Our collection continues to grow. We increased our materials by almost 20%. The more materials available, the more items people check out, which results in increased library usage. This is demonstrated by the increase in large print book circulation. The collection increased by over 50 and the circulation increased over 100%.
Our number of registered borrowers increased by over 70%. New patrons register almost daily. Our outreach efforts also help to increase the number of library clients.
Our Web page continues to expand and be more user friendly. Our patrons take advantage of our Internet and Computer classes, as well as individual instruction at the Library. This helps to translate into increased Web page usage.

Program Participation in 2000

The Brunswick Community Library held 105 programs with over 2,500 people in attendance in 2000. This is almost a 20% increase in the number of programs over last year. Our programs are more diverse and appeal to a larger audience. We now have monthly YA book group meetings. The list below highlights the Library programs of 2000.

We held 43 Story Hours averaging 19 participants for each hour.
The Book Group met 11 times with approximately 4 people attending each meeting.
Our Young Adult Book Group began this summer and met 6 times with an average of 7 teens at each meeting.
We held three workshops and a Red Cross Infant Child Saver Class as a result of the "Babies Need Books and Libraries Grant" an average of 5 people attended each group.
In addition to musical summer reading club events, the Arts Grant of the Capital Region enabled us to have three musical concerts with an average of 125 people in attendance.
Ronald McDonald visited our Library to commemorate the $5,000 grant for non-fiction children's books awarded to us by Ronald McDonald House Charities and 45 people enjoyed his magic show and story telling.
In anticipation of events in February 2001 for Black History Month, an average of 7 volunteers met 3 times to make an authentic colonial quilt.
We provided 12 Internet and Computer Training Classes with an average of 13 people attending each class. Classes are held at Tamarac High School so that each participant has access to a computer.
We held 5 crafts programs for children, which averaged 24 participants per program.
Our young adults wrote and performed in their play attended by 68 people.
We held 2 genealogy programs that averaged 15 participants per program.
We sponsored a Red Cross program to enable teens to be trained as babysitters and 20 children completed that program.
There were 7 programs related to the Summer Reading Program with an average of 75 people attending each event.
With the local Fire Departments we provided a program on Fire Safety and 30 people attended.
The Board of Trustees held a Volunteer Recognition Party and 25 people attended.
The Library hired The Troy Junior Museum to conduct a program on astronomy and 23 people attended.
In conjunction with the Friends of the Library we hosted 225 people at our annual Garden Day.
We created our own special BOOK BINGO cards and held our first game in February for 53 people.
Four people attended a special program on alternative healing.
