Brunswick Community Library Annual Report for 1999

Accomplishments for the Year:

We changed our name to The Brunswick Community Library.
We automated our complete collection by linking to The Upper Hudson Library System.
We began circulating our materials online May 12, 1999. This resulted in a dramatic increase in interlibrary loans.
We continued to expand and offer more Internet and word processing services to our patrons.
Our catalog is accessed through the Internet and patrons can use it from any location with a personal computers via the Internet.
We doubled the number of children involved in the Summer Reading Program to 160.

Challenges Ahead

Space continues to be our biggest problem. However, the Board of Trustees has recommitted themselves to this large task by planning and petitioning for more financial support from our politicians, patrons and business community.
As the collection and programs grow, the need for increasing staff hours and salary becomes more apparent.

We increased our days of service by adding hours on Sundays. This was very popular with some people. We circulated an average of 50 items for 3 hours of service each Sunday.
Our circulation (materials checked out) increased by 16.4%.
Our Interlibrary loans increased by 354% due to use of the online system & encouraging patrons to use the Interlibrary loan system.
Our collection continues to grow. We increased our materials by 22.7%. The more materials available, the more items people check out, which results in increased library usage.
Our number of registered borrowers decreased by over 200%. This was a direct result of registering patrons in our automated system. However, we continue to register new patrons daily & expect an increase next year.
Our Web page has a new look. More sites and areas of information can be obtained on this page.

Program Participation in 1999

The Brunswick Community Library held 85 programs in 1999. This is almost a 14% increase in the number of programs over last year. Our programs are more diverse and appeal to a larger audience. The list below highlights the Library programs of 1999.

We held 41 Story Hours averaging 15 participants for each hour.
We held 3 Toddler Bedtime Story Hours with an average of 12 participants for each hour.
The Book Group met 11 times with approximately 6 people attending each meeting.
We provided 8 Internet Training Classes with an average of 17 people attending each class. Currently our classes are held at Tamarac High School so that each participant has access to a computer.
We held 2 crafts programs for children, which averaged 6 participants per program.
We held 2 genealogy programs that averaged 8 participants per program.
Eight people attended a class on the Y2K problem.
Four people attended a talk on job stress.
We sponsored a Red Cross program to enable teens to be trained as babysitters and 19 children completed that program.
There were 9 programs related to the Summer Reading Program and an average of 62 people attended each event.
With the local Fire Departments we provided a program on Fire Safety and 35 people attended.
The Board of Trustees held a Volunteer Recognition Party and 35 people attended.
We held an Introduction to Computers and Word Processing, which was attended by 10 people.
The Library hired The Troy Junior Museum to conduct a program on Reptiles and 43 people attended.
The Library sponsored Dyken Pond Environmental Center to lead a program on Birds and 44 people attended.
We hosted a Meet the Author program that was attended by 20 people.
